Traci Barmen Brooks

Traci Barmen Brooks has an extensive teaching background and a keen ability to match horses and riders. She coaches and trains at both of Balmoral Farm’s locations on the West Side of Los Angeles.

Carleton Brooks

Carleton Brooks, best known as “CB”, is one of the most respected and recognized horsemen in the country. Whether piloting one of his many nationally ranked hunters to a winning round, judging at a major horse show, or working with a wide variety of students and horses as a trainer and clinician, CB is a hands-on professional with an exemplary reputation. His very successful career spans over three decades coaching, judging, training, riding and competing.

CB founded Uphill Farm, Inc. in 1981 and based his successful training and sales business in Atherton, California. He has been instrumental in the selection, development and successes of numerous show hunters and is credited for the many national championships and accolades for famous horses such as Doubletake, Trinty, Vested, Play with Fire, Calvin, Inspired, Corporate Profit, Center Stage and Buccelatti to name a few. He is a four time recipient of the Pacific Coast Horse Shows Association (PCHA) Don Tipton Award, presented to the professional or amateur who wins the most championships and reserve championships in a rated division for the competition year. In 2013 he was awarded the Arthur B. Hawkins Award for Excellence in Horse Sport.

CB has trained three recipients of the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) Horse of the Year Award and his mounts have earned 15 championships and three reserve championships at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show, the Washington International Horse Show and the National Horse Show at Madison Square Garden.

In 2008 Carleton moved to Los Angeles and joined his wife, Traci at Balmoral Farm Inc. Together they operate a successful training sales and show operation. Carleton is still an active competitor and also concentrates on assisting others to succeed in the show ring as well as bringing along young prospects and managing an active sales and horse transport business.

In 2014 CB and Traci added to their Indoors Championships with Overall Grand Large Junior Champion at the National Horse Show, as well as Reserve Champion in the Small Junior Hunters at the National Horse Show. In 2015 they added more Indoors championships and a HOTY Award. Among those tri-colors included Champion in the Small Junior Hunters at the WIHS and Reserve Champion in the Small Juniors at the National Horse Show. To wrap up 2015 Wish List was awarded the USEF Horse of the Year Award in the Large Juniors 16-17.

CB is also a sought after judge and clinician and is very active in the governance of horse sports at a national level. CB is committed to the betterment of the horse industry and has been very involved in the following organizations and committees: the United States Equestrian Federation Hunter and Hunter Breeding committees, the West Coast Hunter Challenge Series, the American Hunter Jumper Foundation and the Hunter/Jumper Hall of Fame selection committee. He currently serves on the Board of the Pacific Coast Horse Shows Association and the USHJA Competition Management Committee.

CB’s goals have never changed: to produce and promote the finest show horses and riders to compete and win on both a regional and national level and to help others to do the same.

CB’s students will tell you that he doesn’t just instruct – he educates, motivates and inspires. As such, CB has built a strong, loyal, repeat client base. One of CB’s specialties is helping both horse and rider to reach their full potential. Carleton’s keen eye for detail coupled with his vast show ring and training experience makes him able to quickly and easily suggest changes that benefit both horse and rider and that bring out the best in both. His unique communication style gets right to the heart of the matter, often assisting riders to achieve success in areas where previously they had not done so.

CB also excels as a ground man and is often sought after by other trainers and professional riders to provide an experienced eye and outside input at horse shows and at home.

CB is a sought after clinician and conducts clinics for fellow professionals, industry associations and other private groups. CB has a great presence and poses his suggestions in an easy to understand way that immediately helps the student progress as well as the audience to grasp everything from the simple to complex aspects of riding. He is a very entertaining clinician, with a great sense of humor. Never a dull moment!

CB is a respected ‘R’ judge and has officiated at a list of the most prestigious shows, including:

– The Devon Horse Show and County Fair
– The Kentucky National Horse Show
– The Washington International Horse Show
– The Pennsylvania National Horse Show
– The Del Mar National Horse Show
